Statement Marking the 85th Anniversary of the Babyn Yar Tragedy

On the occasion of the 85th anniversary of the tragedy at Babyn Yar, the International Movement Global Citizens pays tribute to those who perished at Babyn Yar and honors the memory of all victims of the Holocaust.

On September 29 and 30, 1941, mass killings of tens of thousands of Jews were carried out in occupied Kyiv. In the years that followed, Babyn Yar remained a site of systematic extermination of various groups of citizens persecuted by the Nazi regime.

In this regard, Global Citizens considers it necessary to underscore that the memory of Babyn Yar is an integral part of Holocaust remembrance and that preserving this memory for future generations is of enduring importance.

The Movement expresses its profound respect for survivors, conveys its sympathy to their families, and notes the important contribution of all those engaged in documenting and preserving testimony concerning the events of those years.

Global Citizens is guided by the understanding that consistently upholding the historical truth about Babyn Yar is of fundamental importance to recognizing the dangers of antisemitism, racial hatred, intolerance, and discrimination based on origin, religion, or community affiliation.

On this day of remembrance, Global Citizens reiterates the need for strict adherence to the principles that protect human dignity and reaffirms its rejection of any attempts to deny or distort the crimes of the Holocaust.

Global Citizens underscores the special responsibility of states, international institutions, civil society, and future generations to preserve the memory of the victims of Babyn Yar.

Global Citizens calls upon the international community to steadfastly uphold the rule of law and the principles of humanism and to take the necessary measures to prevent hatred and xenophobia from taking root in society.
